The book that I chose from realistic fiction is Bad Girls Never Say Die by Jennifer Mathieu because it reminds me of the challenges girls face today in urban neighborhoods. This particular book shared insights on some of the challenges women faced in the 60s in Houston. There were only a few choices for women such as be a good girl and get married or be a bad girl and live your life. A 15 year old girl name Evie is from a working class white family but she became a bad girl when her sister wedding navigated her away from home. Things were complicated for Evie because she had a neighbor name Juanita that took her under her wings but she appeared to be a bad influence. Juanita appeared to be a bad influence because she smokes, drinks, wears intense makeup, and runs with a rough negative crowd. There was loyalty in their relationship but Evie feels uncertain of her place. There was a rich girl name Diane from a wealthy part of town that ended up the killing a attacker that tried to assault and rape Evie. Evie became new friends with Diane and discovered her own courage but she consist on victim blaming herself for the assault. She does not give herself credit for being brave enough to escape this horrible situation. This was during the time when if a woman decided to live and experience life she was classified as a bad girl.
The contemporary realistic fiction book that I chose was Out of my Mind by Sharon Draper because it is a interesting book about a young girl with limitations due to her disability. She is living with a crippling medical disorder and due to her illness she can barely move her arms, walk, or talk. She has an incredible memory because she can remember events in her life from when she was a baby. She is a swift learner so she can pick up meanings behind sounds and language very early on in her life. Melody began to realize what her physical limitations were but her mind and memory was extremely awesome. She was just frustrated and overwhelmed by her inability to physical do things on her own. This story touches my heart because this is some people reality of living with a disability they have absolutely no control over. Melody was able to excel in everything that required using her brains but when it came to physically doing anything she had to wait on assistance from someone else due to her physical limitations.
